Eligibility for PM Surya Ghar solar rooftop subsidy
Please note that the subsidy is only available for –
- Rooftop installation in Residential Homes (Individual Homes & Big Apartments), and NOT for commercial and industrial sectors.
- Installation of Grid Connected Solar System (i.e. those without Battery System).
Additionally, to claim the subsidy, the installed solar panels should have the DCR certificate (Domestic Content Requirement, or DCR panels are those solar panels or modules wherein the solar cell and solar module are manufactured in India)
Subsidy under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
The subsidy offered under this scheme is as follows –

The subsidy is calculated based on either the module capacity or the inverter capacity, whichever is lower.
Please note that this is the revised subsidy structure announced under the newly launched PM Surya Ghar Yojana. Consequently, this Central financial assistance is available to only those consumers who apply for rooftop solar after 13th February 2024.
For the individuals who submitted their application before 13th February 2024, the previous CFA structure (incentive of up to ₹18,000/kW) will be applicable. Please check here for more details
Solar Panel Subsidy and rooftop system price estimation
Benchmark rates for grid connected solar system by MNRE in 2024:

If you have planned to install solar system with latest technology product so average cost is Rs. 55,000 – Rs. 60,000 per kw across India but price differs from state to state. Average price also reduces as the size of the system increases.
This is average price without subsidy which includes product cost, installation cost, service cost for 5 years with net metering facility.

For special states like states such as Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Lakshadweep, subsidy of up to 70% is given by the central government.
Documents needed to apply for the PM Surya Ghar scheme
To apply for the PM Surya Ghar scheme, you will need the following documents:
- Address proof: You need to provide a valid address proof to verify your residence
- Aadhaar card: Your Aadhaar card is required as it is the unique identity of every Indian and is linked with various other accounts
- Income certificate: As this scheme targets people belonging to lower and middle income groups, you need to provide an income certificate
- Electricity connection (meter) account number: During the application process, you need to provide your meter account number
- Bank passbook: You need to provide the photo of the front of your bank passbook
- Passport size photo: Make sure you have a passport size photo of the applicant scanned
- Ration card: Provide the Ration Card which contains the name of the applicant
- Active mobile number and email ID: You need to have a working mobile number and email ID as they are required during the application process
Remember to ensure that the electricity connection and bank account are in your name, and you are an Indian citizen with no prior subsidies for solar panels
Steps to Apply for rooftop solar subsidy in 2024
Apply for the Solar Rooftop Subsidy under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yoj 2024 online hassle free through the official website. Below are the steps to complete the online application for Free Solar Rooftop Yojana
| Step 1 | Visit the National Portal for Rooftop Solar at https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in/ On the homepage, find the registration link in “Apply for Rooftop Solar” section. |
| Step 2 | Register in the portal with the following · Select your State · Select your Electricity Distribution Company · Enter your Electricity Consumer Number · Enter Mobile Number · Enter Email Please follow as per the direction from the portal |
| Step 3 | Login with Consumer Number & Mobile Number Apply for the Rooftop Solar as per the form |
| Step 4 | Wait for the feasibility approval from DISCOM. Once you get the feasibility approval install the plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM |
| Step 5 | Once installation is over, submit the plant details and apply for net meter |
| Step 6 | After installation of net meter and inspection by DISCOM, they will generate commissioning certificate from portal |
| Step 7 | Once you get the commissioning report. Submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. You will receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days. |
